Yesterday and last night, as many of you did, I watched Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) conduct a filibuster over the nomination of John Brennan for CIA director. At first I thought it was a great way to draw attention to a serious issue, drone strikes on American citizens and it was exactly that. As the day turned into night, I was riveted to my TV specifically CSPAN. I not only watched but Tweeted my thoughts as many others did and also spent a lot of time researching filibusters, history, how one is conducted and so forth.
What a great night for America and Sen. Rand Paul! Along with mainly, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) he kept it up for nearly 13 hours. Being a fan of the old movie “Mr. Smith Goes To Washington” I had never really seen one in real time. It was so amazing to watch and listen to. I knew that Strom Thurmond held the record for a filibuster and I knew that Sen. Paul could not leave the floor and I kept rooting for him to go on and on and hoped to wake up in the morning to see him still going but he had to stop as the video below shows.
Defeated by the bladder! No, really, I think Sen. Paul knew that he had made his point and made it well. President Obama now knows that this will not be as easy as he thought. The GOP has found a backbone and it’s called: Rand Paul, Ted Cruz and Mike Lee. We have new leaders and I have renewed hope in my party.
On today’s show we are going to play some of the best parts of the filibuster and the weasel Lindsay Graham’s excuse for not taking part. We also have a slim hope of having Sen. Mike Lee on the show for a few minutes. I hope you’ll join us.
I want to make it VERY clear. I am against drones and drone strikes on American citizens on American soil for ANY reason whatsoever. I #StandWithRand on this issue. I have heard that other Conservative talk shows have talked that these strikes would be helpful to police and military. I say “no way”. We have nearly 13 hours of speaking from the Senate floor yesterday to defend what I just said. NO WAY! Not in this Republic!
